The Plan For Next Month
For a few months now I've noticed these pre made birch panels at Opus. I kept thinking that they were exactly what I needed except I hated the standard sizes they came in. It hit me a couple of weeks ago that I could bolt the panels together to make whatever size I wanted to. Since I plaster over the surface all the seams would be hidden. The panels would have much better support for larger work. I've just been waiting for some cash to try it out.
It's kind of annoying to have to buy them when I could make my own for a lot cheaper. I might actually have a space to do that come spring. One of the storage sheds at work is empty and I could use it to do some work. It's hardly suited for a studio space but it will do for a little light construction. I might even be able to so some of the plaster work there as well.
I've been looking into finding a space in one of the many group studios that are around town. Space rental is about the same no matter where you go and I'm looking at around a couple hundred bucks a month for a suitable sized space. That's actually quite the bargain but still beyond me at the moment.
I'm also going to finally get around to setting up paypal. It's something I've been meaning to do for some time now. For the time being only the smaller scale work will be available for purchase. I'm not so sure how well some of the larger items will ship and because of the weight the cost shoot up quite dramatically.
Over the last few weeks I've
had very little to do so I've had time to think about my work and what
I want to try next. I feel like I might of rushed things a bit
too much over the summer. I got a lot of work done but I felt
really burnt out by October. I'm going to continue working
with the standing figures. Some of the last ones I made of the
children were starting to take off in a new direction that I want to
continue exploring, larger scale, more focus on textures and maybe some
experimenting with collage as well.

The short version is that I admire your choice. I'm happy to see you're going to be adding paypal. If you had prices on your work I think you'd get more sales/inquires for sure. People don't like to ask "how much". Also...when I go to your galleries (which look wonderful btw) you have little dots in front of each piece. Some people might take that to mean that the piece has already sold! I'd add a "buy now" button and price to every piece you have that's available.
I also found this product through the associated bag company that you might be interested in, it's a "Sealed Air Instapak quick foam starter kit"
*Economical and easy to use
*kit includes warmer and an assortment of bags
*warmer is compact and portable.
It would be a bit of an investment for you but it would be perfect for shipping your pieces!
Anyway, good luck with your plans for this month.
Thanks for the info Elise. Those little dots you're seeing are not suppose to be there. In Explorer the galleries don't display correctly. They work is supppose to be in a grid. I use firefox and tend to forget that there's a problem. It's some bug with the squarespace site that I havn't been able to get fixed yet.
Those foam bags look prefect. There is a dealler here in Delta too. It's a little too expesive for right now, but certianly worth keeping in mind.
How thick are the birch panels you are talking about? What about just cutting birch plywood panel to size? It's pretty affordable. Some hardware stores will even cut wood to the size you specify - for free. I use scrap birch plywood for block printing, and it makes a great painting surface after several coats of gesso, sanding with extra-fine wet/dry sandpaper between each coat. It is like porcelain when you're done. But you are not primarily a painter...anyway, just a thought.
Glad to read your recent postings. I was hoping you hadn't fallen into a deep hole somewhere...
These panels are cradled and 1 1/2 inches thick. My biggest problem is with warping so I need the support to help stop that.
There's a great lumber yard I go to up on 7th and Fir called Winsor Plywood, very helpful I can get anything I want cut to size there. I'd still need to build them and don't really have the room at home, but I might have some workspace for that sort of thing in the spring. It's a lot cheaper to make my own. I'm just using these to tide me over till then. The other nice thing about the panels is that they have a nice deep profile that once finished doesn't realy need to be framed.
