Vancouver Sculpture Biennale

Over the last couple of months I've noticed a number of sculptures being installed around the parks near my home. Over the last few years sculptures have popped up. Each year they attract more attention and funding and last year it morphed into the Vancouver Sculpture Biennale. Lucky for me four of the sculptures are only minutes away on the nearby beaches. I've just been waiting for the city to finish installing them and some nice weather to go take some photo's.

and guess what?

Sunny Day.jpg According to the weather this whole week was suppose to be a cold rainy, snowy mess, but somehow we lucked out and today turned out to be quite nice. So I decide to go for a walk with my camera.

I started at Sunset Beach to look at a piece by the artist Benar Venet titled "217.5 Arc x 13"

Beach Sculp 1.jpg

Sitting here on the beach it looks like something that was washed up in a storm.

Next up the beach is a piece by the German artist Markus Schaller called Figure in Circle,

Beach Sculp 2.jpg There's three of them between Sunset Beach and English Bay I didn't even realize they were figures till I looked up the title. His work is in the Venice Biennale.

There's a little patch of grass at the foot of Davie and Denman which I didn't even know had a name but apparently it's called Morton Triangle. Here sits a sculpture by Albert Paley

Beach Sculp 4.jpg The piece is called "Portal"

The last work on my afternoon walk is by Dennis Oppenheim called "Engagement Rings".

Beach Sculp 3.jpg Unfortunately it's still under construction. It's not really one of my favorite pieces either which is a shame because I really like his work. Luckily there is another one of his pieces installed at Coal Harbour and on the next nice day I'm going to head over there to take a look.

The sculptures are going to be up till 2007 so there's plenty of time to check out everything, For more info check out the site for the Vancouver Scuplture Biennale

These sculptures are of poor design I must admit and I have no idea why local authorities will spend money on them.

Am I to assume that your link to Miss Teen Vancouver is somehow a more fitting cultural event for Vancouver? You'll have to forgive me if I'm not convinced.

Silly boy, Miss Teen Vancouver is *obviously* more culturally relevant than stupid old art.

Dennis Oppenheim did a sculpture in front of the University of Alaska Anchorage arts buliding (where I got my BFA) called "Exploding House"...some people hated it and it got shot up a few times.

I loved it personally.

I really like his work as well, just not this one. I still have to get over to coal harbour to see the rest of them.
