New Work
Here are a couple of things I've finished over the last couple of weeks.
These new works are 23" x 36".
I've got a few more things I'm just finishing up and hopefully have post here over the next few days.
One of my pet peeves with acrylic paint is the glossy, plastic
like, surfaces that can slowly build up as you’re working. It’s not
that nice rich surface varnish gives. Varnish is a great way to correct
it once the work is finished, but not very practical when working on
a piece. The best solution I’ve found so far is the liberal use of
modeling past made from marble dust. It turns the usually slick
surface porous. For my purposes thin glazes over this type of
surface tend to work better.
As for the varnish, I’ve pretty much resigned myself that the work
will have to have a matt finish. As much as I love the deep, lush
surface a gloss finish gives it doesn’t work on my highly textured
surfaces. Well, that’s not quite correct. It changes the overall look
of the piece. A matt finish tends to down play the relief surface of
the work whereas, gloss highlights it. I can’t really make up my mind
whether or not the gloss is too distracting. I’ll probably hem and
haw over it some more before making my mind up.
Anyway, I have a few more things on the go. I’ve got a couple of
23"x 48"’s I’m working on which should look really good when I’m
done. I also want to do a number of smaller works, but I keep
putting that off. I’m getting some ideas for even larger work,
something around 36" x 48". I’m not sure if I really have the space
for it. I’ve never felt more ready to get back into a dedicated studio
space than I do right now.
