New Work

Here we go, some new work.

hollow men sm.jpg I really need to set up a new picture gallery for this year.  I'm just waiting to I get the new camera to reshoot the pictures.

The large works are taking longer to finish.  I played around with the colour on this one for quite some time.  At 23" x 48" this is my largest work so far.  I really feel like I'm finally getting the materials to do what I want them to.  The panels are very solid now and the sculptural relief feels very integrated with the surface.  Now I can really start to play with surface treatments.  There are a ton of possibilities here.

I love how the creepy gashes have morphed into ties. Very symbolic!

It's funny but before you and Jackie pointed that out to me I just thought of them as ties. I's totaly in keeping with the idea behind the work though so I've decided to play with it.

On those first ones you posted I immediately read them as open gashes on their chest...they reminded me of all the 9-5 types who get their souls crushed on a daily basis.

I'm looking forward to seeing where you go with these.

I love these guys! It would be really interesting to see them hanging in a gallery - in the sequence that you made them. Yeah - the gashes/ties thing: when I was a little kid, my twin bro and I used to go to the Saturday matinee all the time. I vividly recall one movie: "Planet of the Vampires", where the vampires didn't have any skin. They had some kind of space suits over their skinless bodies - that's what these pieces reminded me of. Elise has her zombies, I have my vampires!

Did you know that the movie Planet of the Vampires was Inspiration behind the movie Alien. My roomate is a big horror movie buff and he rented a restored copy of Planet of the Vampires. It's a great looking movie. Maybe all this stuff is coming up from subconscious memories of all these movies.
