Small Projects
Friday, February 15, 2008 at 07:23AM I've been kicking around the idea of making some plaster cast of my work for some time now. After my show last October I really felt like I needed a break from what I was doing. The Hollow Man series had taken up two years. It was a large, time consuming project and I really don't feel up to jumping into another one right away. I decided it was time to do something a little different.
My first couple of experiments were with latex molds and were a complete disaster. I switched to silicone molds and I have to say it's been a lot easier. I'm sculpting the originals out of Roma Plastilina . At three by four inches this is my smallest work yet and I decided that I'm just going to have some fun with these small projects. The first one happens to be Hollow Men, but the ones to follow will be whatever I feel like doing. The first cast have turned out great. Painting them was a bit of an adjustment and I wasn't too sure it would work, but the ones I've finished so far look really good.
It's a good project for me right now. I can immerse myself into the production without having to think about the work too much. I can sell the finish work cheaply and still make more of them if I wish. I've got a couple of others on the go and will post the finished work as I go.
