Cash Crunch

Ok, maybe this has more to do with the fact that I'm now just one year shy of forty than anything else, but I'm finding myself more and more in a bit of a  panic over what my future fate might be.

Artistically, last year has been my best year yet, with published work and a solo show to end the year.  Unfortunately, to make last year possible I basically had to break the budget, leaving me way in the red.  I have no regrets with my choices for the last year.  It finally feels like I'm making some head way, but I'm now stuck with the question, where do I go from here?

It's been my experience that people have a huge enthusiasm for art, but they also have a huge reluctance to buy original artwork.   There could be any number of reasons why this is, personally I think it's a side effect of mass consumer culture, but who knows.

Anyway in an attempt to recoup some of my time and money I decided to offer up some of my work in the form of cards and such.  There's a link over on the sidebar there that will take you directly to my online shop. You can also find the site here.  The sale of these items will help support my future artistic activities.  I've had a number of people ask for this.  Personally I'd rather be selling my originals, but if people feel more comfortable giving their support with the purchase of a pack of postcards, who am I to argue.  I'm still setting the shop up and will be adding more items over the next few days.  Enjoy!

The LCD Monitor Blues

Over the holidays I picked up a nice flat screen monitor, and everything on it looks great with the exception of my artwork.  I've been fiddling with the colour for over a month now  and my work still doesn't look quite right to me.  I'm almost at the point where I might just hook up my old CRT monitor  for the sole purpose of editing my work, but for the time being I'll calibrate, and calibrate, and calibrate some more.

Never Seen One of These Before

OsyterCatcher.jpg          I did a google search for " Black sea bird with long red beak"  and up popped, Black Oystercatcher.  There were three or four of them hanging around near English Bay the other day.  I'm no birder so I have no idea how common they are around here or whether they are just passing through.  I'm pretty sure I've never  seen one before.

When I said I was suffering from a bad case of the winter blahs this year I wasn't kidding.  At the moment everything seems like such a huge effort.   I feel like I could sleep for a month.  I'm not sure why this year is worse than previous years.  It might be the long spell of wet, cold weather we have been experiencing here.  I just seems to go on and on.

Trying to get any work done when I'm in this sort of mood seems next to impossible.  Pairing that up with the lull after a solo show isn't helping matters.  I'm stuck in one of those "what do I do next" ruts.

I do have a mini project on the go, but I'm not sure how successful it's going to be.  I should have something to show around the end of the month, and I do have some ideas for new major projects.  I just don't have the resources at hand to begin.  Hopefully I'll be able to start over the next couple of months.

I'm Not Dead!

Sorry for the long break in posting here.  I was taking a bit of a mid winter break and suffering from a bad case of the winter blahs.  I've got some new projects on the go and I'll get back to posting here more often, I promise.
